Soweto Wine Festival

Raise your glasses for Soweto’s Wine Revolution!

Having grown up in the south of Jo’burg, Soweto was not a foreign concept to me like I feel it is for most Jo’burgers. When I was a little girl, we would often drop off people in and around Soweto and it was never a big deal, so visiting Soweto is sorta-but-not-quite-almost-home in a sense for me, does that make any sense?

I absolutely love the vibe of the streets and how friendly everybody is in Soweto. I love the informal traders and the street fashion. I love that it’s so developed in parts and the architecture has taken on its own style too. This is why I’m so excited that from 3 – 6 September, I’ll be spending #72hoursinSoweto, trying out some things I haven’t done before and most importantly, enjoying the Soweto Wine Festival.

It’s being touted as the Soweto Wine Revolution and some of my favourite wineries will be present, as well as some additional ones I haven’t been able to try. Plus it’ll be Spring, plus it’ll be flipping’ cool (I am going to have to plan cool outfits), plus there’s also some delicious food to try. Oh, and look at this list of wineries, ‘cos you know, wine.

This year is the 11th Soweto Wine Festival and to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the signing of the Freedom Charter on Walter Sisulu Square, that’s exactly where it’ll be hosted. If you’ve ever been to the square, you’ll know it’s an awesome space and I can’t wait to spend some proper time there, rather than just a quick walk-around.

I’ll be posting lots of pics and details on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram ahead of the festival as well as during. I’d also recommend getting your tickets (buy them here) so that you don’t get too much FOMO watching me enjoy all those delicious wines over the weekend!

Seriously though, I cannot wait for a new venue for a wine festival instead of spending time inside another conference centre. I think this is going to be super special and definitely more my vibe. All I’m saying is Jozi, this is far better than hanging out in a shopping mall on a Saturday afternoon…

Oh, and thank you Natalie from Tails of a Mermaid for the pics! My #72hoursinSoweto experience is sponsored, but all content will be my own.

A self-appointed director of happiness amongst my friends and family, I spend my days writing, brainstorming online marketing ideas and figuring out which country is next on the bucket list of places to see.
