Getting dressed for the theatre

Most people that know me know that I’ve got what’s called ‘my radius’. I’ve become so used to living in Parkhurst that I hardly ever venture out of the 3km around me. Mostly because I everything I’d ever need is within it.

The only time I really leave is to visit my folks once a week. And that I consider a bit of roadtrip, even though it’s only 20 minutes away!

But all this aside, I left my radius for the best reason this Saturday, music. I dragged some friends along to watch the Tallest Man on Earth on Saturday at the Jo’burg Theatre, and it was simply AMAZING!

I forgot what it’s like to actually get dressed up and go to the theatre. Red heels, red lips, pearls and big smiles were part of what made the night so great. And shame on you to all in attendance who didn’t even bother to put on a clean shirt!

I first heard of Tallest Man about two years ago when a friend sent me the link to the video below. I thought he was absolutely brilliant and started listening to anything I could find.

Those of you were there will probably agree that it really was a fantastic evening. Wrestlerish were just brilliant and the best choice for an opening act. I felt like I was back in London again, they definitely have the presence to compete on an international stage and Werner Olckers shows a humble spirit that I think credits the whole act.

Tallest Man. Woah. I felt a weird elation when he started singing. He looked completely comfortable in his awkward ability in stage and his pseudo US accent was entertaining in itself. I got the impression that while he knows what effect his music has on an audience, he doesn’t revel in it. A modesty similar to the opening act.

One of my best parts was in reference to his guitar monitor: “Usually this thing tells me if I’m wrong or right, this one is just telling me to fuck off”.

I’m so lucky to have been there and I really have to thank the magic of twitter for finding out about that gig soon enough to book some pretty awesome tickets. Thanks also to the friends who came along not even knowing what to expect (they loved it of course).

Now listen!
