Craighall Park (my suburb in Jo’burg), is always full of surprises for me. There are hidden cafes and galleries, cool activities wedged in between veggie stores and Delta Park.
Delta is a 13-hectare public park. It covers a long sliver through central Jo’burg and has always been a popular space for fitness fanatics, dog walkers and families. Most people in the area know it, and I visit regularly on my runs. There’s even a Saturday Parkrun through Delta Park which is VERY popular.
One thing about Delta Park is the old, collapsed water reservoir in it’s Western quadrant. The reservoir has basically fallen in completely on one side and is overgrown with weeds and trees, but a semi-circle of its original concrete still exists and has been a consistent canvas for local graffiti artists for many years. As I’ve visited the park over the years, so I’ve seen the graffiti evolve from rather amateur to what it is right now, some of the best work I’ve seen in the park.
I’ve been meaning to take pictures and post them for so long, but just didn’t get around to it. P and I recently went for a walk around the park and for once I was actually carrying my phone so I snapped some basic ones of some of the work here. There are still some strange bits and pieces in between the bigger pieces, but I love how these are all thought out panoramic murals that stretch around what’s remaining of the reservoir.
There are a few other pieces that I’d like to go back and take some photos of, but when you see how big the park actually is, it’s easier said than done to relocate them sometimes after catching a glimpse of something on a run and trying to recall where exactly it was a few days later!

Brilliant graffiti here, I love street at so much! :)
Thanks for photographing the art in Delta. A small correction….Delta Park is 104 hectares in extent, not 13. A wonderful green space in JHB!
Thanks for the correction Don! I’m not sure where that number came from!
Hi Kate.
I love the article.
I felt as though as I was right next to you as you took the photo’s and explained everything about the area, surroundings, activities and so on.
I am hoping to plan a trip up JHB side, this year before heading abroad again, and would love to meet with you while there.
I have not done much exploring in JHB at all, really and so this would be a first attempt per say :-)
#LoveandTravelHugs , great article, wonderful images!
Thanks for the kind words! It would be great to meet up when you’re next in Jozi. Pop me an email via the contact page ahead of your visit and we’ll make a plan!
