I’m admittedly very apprehensive to blog about my experience at Restaurant Mosaic at The Orient. A meal so opulent feels beyond my own grasp of words, yet at the same time was so amazing that it would be a shame not to share it.
The drive to The Orient is something in itself. Hidden in the countryside just outside Pretoria, The Orient has a certain mystery about it. The Moorish architecture seems out of place here, almost a 3D stamp of a building that’s been placed in a big enough clearing but on the wrong continent entirely. The tall walls hide it’s eclectic decor and imposing structures. Inside, the fascination to explore strikes all who are lucky enough to visit.
Restaurant Mosaic at The Orient has also been a mystical place for me over the years. I first heard about this incredible place from a colleague. It seems to be a place of intrigue and delight all at once for those that have visited and those that are yet to see its culinary wonders. Chef Chantel Dartnell floated into our private dining room, perfectly put together and hypnotic in her gestures. The explanation of the menu choices flowed across the length of our table, followed by a description of certain courses that were fulfilling in their chosen words.
I’ve had the privilege of eating at quite a few of South Africa’s fine dining restaurants, but I have to say upfront that this was not only the most opulent eating experience I’ve ever had, it was also that which played with my tastebuds the most. We opted to pair our 7-course meal with local wines, but the idea of going back to try the menu with the international pairing is definitely something I’ve shelved for a VERY special occassion.
I’ve chosen not to detail each course simply because I don’t feel like I can do these any justice whatsoever. I will say though that each was exquisitely unique, perfectly presented and delicious in their own right. The meal lasted just under five hours for us. It’s a long time to sit and eat, but the timing was superior here, placing enough time between each to prepare for the next course. Although the wine wasn’t generous in its amounts, it was perfect for me. I’ve had pairings where I’ve battled to keep up, but the amount was just right for each course.
Eating at Restaurant Mosaic at The Orient is worth every cent, but be prepared to part with quite a few cents to enjoy a meal here with wine pairing. Per head, you’re looking at between R800 and R1000, but the experience really is special enough to justify this price if you’re as into eating as I am. Bookings are absolutely essential and it’s a great idea to arrive a little early to enjoy a drink in the gorgeous gardens ahead of the first serving.

Would LOVE to eat here! We first came across Mosaic and Chantel at Taste of Joburg a few years back and loved the menu items she was serving there. She won us over when we were one “Crown” short for the desert and she gave it to us anyway :-) Definitely on the list of “must-eat-at” locations. Thanks for whetting our appetite!
I absolutely loved the desserts! I would gladly eat an entire menu base don those alone ;)
The mushrooms were out of this world !!!
Such an awesome meal! I’d love to go back for the winter menu. It’s the perfect spot to snuggle up, enjoy the wine and eat ALL the food!
