I adore eating. It probably explains my curvy hips, but that’s okay. It’s also the explanation for my being in Durban this long weekend, I came for the food (and the naps on my sister’s couch). Part of this expedition in gastronomy includes the Durban Street Food Festival which is taking place over this Heritage Day weekend.
In Jo’burg, we’re a little spoilt for choice when it comes to food markets and I wasn’t sure what to expect from the Durban Street Food Festival, but let me say straight up: DURBAN BROUGHT IT.
The market is inside the 8 Morrison Street building in Rivertown, Durban. It’s a great space with stores on the ground floor and offices upstairs. It lends itself perfectly to this kind of market and there were tons of different stores offering different treats and meals.
What I ate at the Durban Street Food Festival
I tried to have a little bit of everything, but these are my top recommendation for what I did get to try. There were tons of other things that I may go back for, but these were all fantastic:
- Love bites from Wicked Donuts – these are donut balls filled with Nutella, basically heaven in pastry
- The chilli con carne from Catering For U – spicy, warm and delicious
- The ice-cream macaron sandwiches from Sugarlicious – in every flavour
- Watermelon beer from The Standeaven Brewery – good grief

I would suggest getting yourself to the festival if you’re in Durban over the weekend, just to eat your way through it and drink some watermelon beer. Entrance is R50 per person and I thought the pricing on everything was pretty fair.
