Clarens has become such a popular weekend spot if you live in Jo’burg and you just want to get out for a few days. I’ve been going to Clarens since I was a kid and have seen the village grow over time and stayed in quite a few of the self-catering spots and guest houses. There is one spot though that I absolutely adore for a romantic getaway and that’s Lilliput House.

This darling spot is perfect a for a couple looking to wind down and enjoy nothing but the calm pace of the village and the mountain views. Lilliput House first popped onto my radar when we drove past it on another stay. It’s tall, narrow frame stood in contrast to all of the larger houses surrounding it and I fell in love without even seeing the inside!

It’s a special place, with a bottle of bubbles waiting on arrival and an enormous ball and claw bathtub set out with every deliciously-scented item you would want to throw into your water. The comfy couch is perfect for a snuggle, but the views from the patio are what this place should be known for. Looking out over the gazebo and immaculate garden with a glass of wine in hand was such an ideal way to spend a Saturday afternoon in spring. Small touches, like the box of bird seed on the terrace table, are what bring out the magic here.

Although I didn’t take photos, the bedroom has a gorgeous selection of antique furniture and is completed with drapery and vintage decor. You can’t help but feel you’ve been whisked into the scene from a very romantic movie!

A self-catering stay, the kitchen is stocked with every item you could need to prepare a gourmet meal, while the Purple Onion Deli on the village square will have all the ingredients necessary. This is the place I know I’ll go back to as soon as I’m in Clarens. It’s a quiet place to think, read and enjoy a cold glass of bubbles!
