Magnificent Mexican at Cosecha at Noble Hill

Admittedly, the title of this post is a little deceiving. Calling Cosecha a Mexican restaurant would likely be an insult, as the menu really carries a variety of Latin American-inspired dishes. It’s also the best meal of its kind I’ve eaten in South Africa, and that’s not because most South African Mexican restaurants are just plain revolting. Hint – it’s not all about nachos and melted cheese.

Cosecha Noble Hill

Situated on the border of Stellenbosch and Franschoek in Simonsberg-Paarl, Noble Hill Wine Estate is relaxed and quite different to other estates. The staff are laid back and friendly, and welcome guests into Cosecha and the adjacent tasting room with big warm smiles, perhaps an indication of the spicy delicacies that lie in wait.

Cosecha Noble Hill

Despite being winter, the day was gorgeous with sunshine and no wind or clouds in site. We sat outside on the terrace overlooking the small dam in one direction and the outer vineyards in the other. Our waitress brought her big smile to our table along with some nachos and a garlicky chickpea paste as a little snack. Looking over the menu, there is a choice between some tapas-style starters and some delicious-sounding main courses. Some were familiar, while others made me feel like there was no way I could be in South Africa!

Try the guacamole at Cosecha!

We opted to go for the tapas at our table and ordered a selection of jalapeño hush puppies, quesadillas, empanadas and my absolute best, fresh guacamole. All of these were absolutely outstanding, but the guacamole was the virtual cherry on my cake: all of the ingredients are brought to the table and prepared right in front of you. Who doesn’t love a little theatre with their meal right?

All of the estate’s wines are available by the glass and I sipped on their crisp, mineral viognier while munching happily. This is a restaurant to really relax at, is very family-friendly and ideal to get away from some of the bigger estates on the area that are overrun by visitors.

You can visit the restaurant’s website here for more information.
